Many Beats / One Community brings together young musicians and established artists to inspire community in two unique events.

When young people take the stage, music is transformed into something bigger. It becomes community.

Community Music Schools of Toronto (CMST) is delighted to present Many Beats / One Community – two unique celebrations of community, mentorship and the joy of making music. Taking place on June 3 in Regent Park and June 4 in Jane Finch, Many Beats / One Community builds connections between CMST students, exceptional artists and mentors, and our local communities to present a powerful showcase of student voices and talents.

Many Beats / One Community Regent Park, presented in association with the Luminato Festival, features an incredible collaboration with CMST strings students, Canadian rap legend Saukrates, and acclaimed ensemble Strings from Paris. Saukrates approached CMST a year ago with an idea to launch the Saukrates Youth Electronic Symphony Orchestra (SYESO) to collaborate on the creation of two new songs. Developed in workshops throughout the year and time spent in the recording studio, the new songs will be brought to life by Saukrates, artists of Strings from Paris and CMST strings students. The world premiere of the songs will be performed live on stage with 50 CMST strings students at Many Beats / One Community Regent Park.

Many Beats / One Community Regent Park is an evening that celebrates community, mentorship and collaboration. Alongside the main premiere event, youth will be participating in events throughout the Daniels Spectrum building including an open mic with youth-led arts organization Lil Sis, a visual arts opening event with ArtHeart and live performances with KUNÉ Global Orchestra, Spirit Wind Hand Drum Group, Dancing with Parkinson’s and Cris Derksen, a JUNO-nominated Indigenous cellist and composer, internationally renowned for genre-defying music that bridges the traditional and contemporary.

The second night of Many Beats / One Community is taking place outdoors at our Jane Finch location on June 4 in a celebration of the magic of music making. The event will feature a collaboration with Canadian music icon and JUNO Award–winning artist Jully Black, alongside CMST choir students, who have been rehearsing with her to perform an inspiring piece together.  Other special guests include KUNÉ Global Orchestra and Spirit Wind Hand Drum Group.

Both events are free to the public and created to inspire community by building connections, amplifying student voices and celebrating the cultural diversity of our students and families.
