1933 – 2026

A visionary philanthropist whose kindness, curiosity, and generosity brought music and opportunity to thousands of young people at CMST.

Community Music Schools of Toronto (CMST) mourns the passing of Dr. Allan Carswell, a remarkable Canadian whose legacy of leadership, generosity, and commitment to community will be felt for generations to come at CMST and in causes across Canada and worldwide.

Dr. Carswell was widely recognized as a pioneering physicist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, and together with his late wife, Helen, was equally distinguished by a deep commitment to supporting young people and expanding access to opportunity.

Allan and Helen’s belief in the transformative power of education and enrichment closely mirrored CMST’s mission to ensure that every child can access the benefits of music, regardless of circumstance. Through philanthropic support of CMST – particularly our music program in Jane Finch – Allan helped bring to life a vision in which music became a pathway for thousands of young people, over many years, to discover their potential, build confidence, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Not one to lead from afar, Allan was a regular presence at CMST recitals and events, knowing many of our students and families by name. In Allan, our students could see a kindred spirit and mentor – someone who radiated curiosity and warmth, and who championed a world in which kindness and generosity could be a powerful force for shaping a better future.

CMST was fortunate to have worked alongside the Carswell family on several initiatives over many years. In 2016, they established the Helen Carswell Chair in Community-Engaged Research in the Arts at York University, through which CMST collaborated on research projects with faculty and students, examining the impact and value of arts education for children and youth in underserved communities.

A defining reflection of Allan’s deep commitment to young people and the arts at CMST was his transformational $6 million gift toward the construction of a new music school for students in Jane Finch. His generosity served as a catalyst for CMST to think boldly and begin the journey of creating a permanent home for students and families in the neighbourhood.

This purpose-built space will provide a stable, welcoming environment designed for learning, creativity, and belonging, while enabling CMST to more than double the number of students we serve in the community and significantly expand access to free, high-quality music education.

It is with profound remembrance and deep gratitude that we honour Allan and Helen’s legacies by naming the new music school in her honour: The Helen Carswell School of Music at Jane Finch.

Through his philanthropy and engagement, Dr. Carswell helped strengthen the foundation upon which CMST will continue to thrive. We are deeply grateful for his contributions and honoured to carry forward a legacy that champions access, creativity, and possibility for every child.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
