CMST Year in Review - Growth, Creativity and Connection

This year at CMST has been marked by growth, creativity, and a deepening sense of connection across programs and communities. Our enrollment grew to 895 students, who participated in more than 1,100 lessons and activities weekly. Our partnership with Kapapamahchakwew - Wandering Spirit School for Indigenous students thrived, with 75 students receiving weekly music instruction from CMST faculty. We also continued our partnership with WoodGreen Community Services, providing weekly DJ and beatmaking classes to more than 50 youth involved in the justice system.

With increased enrollment across sites, more young people than ever are finding their place in music while building skills and confidence. A major highlight was the expansion of programming at Jane Finch, including the launch of strings at Jane Finch and the continued growth of the Synth Club, both of which are opening new pathways for students to explore sound, composition, and ensemble work in fresh and innovative ways.

This year saw the introduction of tabla programming, and Indigenous hand drumming as part of our Truth and Reconciliation learning, bringing rhythm, cultural knowledge, and reflection into the heart of our musical practice. These additions have enriched students’ understanding of music as an art form and a way of connecting to history and community.

CMST’s curriculum emphasizes collaboration through ensembles, bands, duos, and small group projects that encourage students to listen, adapt, and create together. This is particularly visible in growing youth-led music spaces, including the Youth Committee, which helped shape winter events and supported the formation of a Youth Committee Band in Jane Finch.

Student mentorship expanded through our work with lil sis, a youth-led, youth-focused artist resource centre. With mentorship, workshops, and open mic performance opportunities, lil sis helps students explore their creative passions alongside peers while building their own leadership skills.

Together, these initiatives reflect a shared direction at CMST: more music, more collaboration, and more opportunities for young people to be seen, heard, and celebrated on stage.
