Three years ago, Carlo De Lorenzi, 68, set out to run every street in Toronto. An avid runner who had participated in 10 marathons and several half-marathons over the past 30 years, jogging through every street in his hometown Toronto seemed like an exciting challenge.
Alongside his running goals, Carlo chose to include fundraising in his journey. In his 'Takin’ it to the Streets’ fundraising campaign, Carlo aimed to raise $10,390 – one dollar for every street – in support of CMST.
Music is an important part of Carlo’s life. “When I was five years old my parents offered to provide me with music lessons on an instrument of my choosing,” says Carlo. “I decided to go big and settled on the piano. My father had to cut a hole in our basement wall to make way for an old upright he had rescued. The piano lessons proved to be consequential, igniting my lifelong passion for music.”
Carlo had been set to complete running 100% of the streets in Toronto when he was diagnosed with brain cancer in May of 2025. With permission from his oncology team, he was allowed to continue running. Since May, Carlo has been joined on his daily runs by friends, family, and people who heard about his journey. He even ran with Mayor Olivia Chow at 6:45AM on a sunny Tuesday morning in September. His perseverance and courage have brought many supporters to his side.
Carlo completed running every street in Toronto on September 19, 2025 at CMST’s Regent Park Music School and he is the fourth person in Toronto to complete this achievement. His accomplishment was celebrated in a special finish line event and performance of ‘Takin’ it to the Streets’ with CMST faculty members. You can listen to an interview with Carlo on CBC Metro Morning and see coverage of his finish line on CBC News online and the Toronto Star.
On top of his running achievement, Carlo blew past his original fundraising goal, raising over $22,000 in support of CMST!
“Carlo is an absolute inspiration to our community at CMST,” says Richard Marsella, CMST’s Executive Director. “His perseverance and strength to complete his running challenge while undergoing cancer treatment is extraordinary. His courage sets himself as a role model for everyone at CMST – kids, faculty, staff and our community – and we are so grateful for his contributions to our school.”
We thank Carlo and everyone who contributed to his campaign. Funds raised through ‘Takin’ it to the Streets’ helps provide 875 kids in Toronto every week with access to free, high-quality music classes. Through music instruction, performance opportunities and mentorship, kids and young people grow their creativity, self-esteem and connect with a supportive community. Thank you, Carlo!
